Forthcoming changes to the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) treaty, new regulations will dictate that all containers have a verified weight certificate before loading on to a ship. The new law which will come into force on the 1st July 2016 is an attempt to reduce the number of accidents at sea caused by wrongly declared shipping container weights.
What is SOLAS?
SOLAS in itself is not new, as the first ever version of the treaty was set after the sinking of the Titanic in 1914. SOLAS is an international maritime safety treaty which is applied by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and is designed to ensure that all ships comply with set minimum safety standards in construction, equipment and operation.
